Recent August 2026 data showed Japan’s core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) holding at 1.9% YoY, unchanged from July and below the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for the fifth straight month, as energy subsidies and base effects offset pass-through from higher crude prices tied to Middle East tensions and yen weakness. The Bank of Japan’s July 2026 Outlook projects fiscal-year core-core inflation at 2.5%, revised modestly lower, with the pace expected to exceed 2% clearly only in the second half amid rising wages and AI-related semiconductor costs. These dynamics, combined with the central bank’s September 18 rate hike to 1.25%, underpin trader consensus around the 2.0-2.4% band for the full 2026 figure while capping odds of sharper upside.
