South Korea's 2026 annual CPI inflation market reflects closely contested trader sentiment, with the three leading outcomes—3.0% or higher, 2.7-2.9%, and 2.4-2.6%—separated by just a few percentage points in implied probability. Recent data show headline inflation at 3.1% year-over-year in August, up from 2.8% in July, while core inflation accelerated to 3.4%, driven by base effects from prior telecom discounts alongside persistent pressures from elevated oil prices, a weaker won, and recovering domestic demand tied to semiconductor-led growth. The Bank of Korea has responded with consecutive rate hikes to 3.0%, maintaining its 2.7% full-year forecast but acknowledging upside risks from second-round effects and stronger economic momentum now projected at 3.3% GDP growth. September data and upcoming policy meetings will likely determine whether temporary factors subside or demand-side inflation sustains higher readings.
