The S&P 500 has traded near record levels above 7,670–7,800 in mid-August 2026, supported by cooler-than-expected PPI and CPI prints that lowered near-term rate-hike odds and reinforced expectations the Federal Reserve will hold the funds rate at 3.50–3.75 percent. Resilient corporate earnings, particularly in technology and AI-related names, have offset softer retail sales data and seasonal August weakness, keeping equity valuations elevated relative to Treasury yields. Traders are focused on the August 28 Jackson Hole speech for fresh policy signals, upcoming inflation releases, and any shifts in labor-market indicators that could alter the market-implied path for monetary policy through year-end.
