The Iranian rial continues to depreciate sharply on parallel markets amid the 2026 US-Iran conflict, with Bonbast exchange rates reaching 180,400 toman (1.804 million rials per USD) as of May 15, up slightly from prior days. Stalled US-Iran peace talks and limited shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have driven crude oil above $104 per barrel, exacerbating Iran's economic isolation despite recent US 30-day waivers allowing at-sea Iranian oil sales to ease global prices. Rampant inflation has spiked costs for staples like bread and chicken to unaffordable levels for average earners. Traders monitor potential escalations, diplomatic signals, or sanction shifts before the May 31 resolution window closes, as further Hormuz disruptions could accelerate devaluation.
