Messi enters the 2026 World Cup at age 38 as Argentina’s captain and defending champion, named to the squad for what is widely expected to be his final international tournament. Recent pre-tournament friendlies highlighted fitness concerns, including a late limp after a penalty goal versus Iceland, prompting questions about his minutes and availability amid muscle fatigue management. Traders focus on his reduced workload in a loaded attack, historical World Cup goal-scoring pace (13 career tournament goals, four from Klose’s record), and Argentina’s group-stage schedule plus knockout path. Any confirmed injury or rotation by coach Lionel Scaloni could sharply limit his opportunities, while strong early form or favorable matchups might extend his involvement and goal tally.
