Recent Scottish Parliament election results have reinforced trader consensus around John Swinney continuing as First Minister. The SNP secured the largest share of seats in the May 2026 vote but fell short of an outright majority, leaving Swinney as the incumbent SNP leader best placed to secure the required parliamentary nomination and form a minority administration. Opposition parties, including Scottish Labour and the Scottish Conservatives, trail far behind in current positioning, reflecting limited immediate prospects for alternative candidates. Potential challenges remain if coalition talks stall or internal SNP dynamics shift before the formal vote in Holyrood, though established parliamentary arithmetic and Swinney’s recent mandate continue to anchor the dominant outlook.
