SpaceX's successful Starship Flight 13 in late July 2026, which achieved a precise upper-stage soft landing in the ocean, has driven trader sentiment toward a potential tower catch attempt on the upcoming Flight 14. Elon Musk stated that the company plans to use the launch tower's mechanical arms, or chopsticks, to capture the Starship upper stage on the next flight unless post-flight data reveals issues, building on repeated Super Heavy booster catches since 2024. The upper stage presents distinct engineering challenges due to its lighter mass, higher reentry speeds, and need for reinforced hardpoints and rapid actuator response. Upcoming catalysts include Flight 14's launch window, FAA regulatory approvals, and any structural upgrades to the Mechazilla tower arms. Market-implied odds near 50% for an August or September 2026 catch reflect both optimism from recent progress and caution over the timeline for this first-of-its-kind maneuver.

A successful catch is defined as the chopsticks capturing and supporting the Starship upper stage without it falling to the ground or causing catastrophic damage during the landing process.
If SpaceX attempts an ocean splashdown of the Starship upper stage instead of attempting to catch it using the Orbital Launch Tower's chopsticks, that attempt will not qualify. If no Starship launch occurs, or a successful catch does not take place, by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "No."
The resolution source for this market will be official video provided by SpaceX (https://www.youtube.com/c/SpaceX), as well as secondary video feeds and/or written reports if necessary.
