Incumbent Democrat Josh Kaul holds a clear lead in the Wisconsin attorney general race heading into the November 3, 2026 general election, driven by his status as a two-term officeholder who prevailed in a 2022 rematch against Republican Eric Toney by roughly 35,000 votes. Both candidates secured their party nominations without opposition in the August 2026 primaries, allowing focus to shift to the general election where Toney benefits from unified Republican support and outside ad spending targeting crime lab delays and narcotics enforcement. Kaul has drawn endorsements from labor groups and Democratic lawmakers while prevailing in a recent state Supreme Court ruling on settlement fund authority. With roughly two months until voting, the implied probabilities reflect Kaul’s structural advantages in a state Trump carried in 2024, though the historically narrow margin leaves room for shifts from turnout or late campaign developments.
