Belit Onay holds a commanding position in the Hannover mayoral runoff due to his 45.6 percent share in the September 13 first round, far ahead of SPD challenger Axel von der Ohe at 21.5 percent. As the incumbent Green since 2019, Onay benefits from established voter recognition and policy continuity on mobility, climate measures, and urban development amid a fragmented field where CDU and AfD candidates were eliminated. The September 27 runoff favors the frontrunner under standard German local election patterns, reflected in trader consensus. A narrow upset remains possible if turnout shifts sharply toward SPD supporters or late developments alter preferences before ballots close.
