Early predictions for the 99th Academy Awards highlight Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three,” and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Tom Cruise vehicle “Digger” as leading Best Picture contenders, alongside Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine” and the Cannes winner “La Bola Negra.” Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures are positioned for strong nomination hauls based on scale, talent, and distribution muscle. With festival season still ahead, current trader sentiment reflects historical patterns favoring high-profile directorial projects and studio campaigns over smaller releases. Key upcoming catalysts include post-Labor Day updates from Venice and Telluride, which typically shift momentum through reviews and guild buzz. Nominations are slated for January 2027, leaving ample runway for late-year releases or critical surprises to alter the field.
