Mayes Middleton secured the Republican nomination after defeating Chip Roy in the May 2026 primary runoff, positioning him as the frontrunner in a state where Republicans have held the attorney general’s office since 1998. Recent September 2026 polling shows Middleton leading Democratic nominee Nathan Johnson by roughly five points, with over 20 percent of voters undecided, reflecting a tighter contest than historical norms for the office. Johnson, who won his party’s runoff, emphasizes bipartisan work and anti-corruption priorities, drawing some moderate support. Traders price Middleton at 81 percent amid Texas’s Republican lean and his primary momentum, while Johnson sits at 18 percent given the open seat dynamics and polling trends. The November 3 general election remains the resolution trigger.
