South Korea's semiconductor-driven equity rally has propelled the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) to year-to-date gains exceeding 75 percent through mid-May 2026, fueled by robust global AI infrastructure spending and elevated memory-chip pricing that benefits core holdings Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The ETF's heavy concentration in these names has amplified sensitivity to export data and chip-cycle momentum, with KOSPI trading at all-time highs earlier in the year before recent volatility triggered record outflows of $409 million on May 7 amid profit-taking. Dollar-denominated returns remain influenced by KRW fluctuations and U.S. tech demand, while May seasonality has historically been subdued following strong first-quarter performance. Traders are monitoring upcoming Korean export figures and broader semiconductor order trends for potential shifts in near-term pricing.
