South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) has surged over 87% year-to-date through mid-May 2026, driven primarily by record demand for memory chips amid global AI infrastructure spending, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix comprising roughly 45% of the fund's holdings. The KOSPI benchmark recently approached 8,000 before a sharp pullback exceeding 6% on May 15, triggered by comments on potential "citizen dividends" from AI profits and broader profit-taking. The Korea Development Institute upgraded its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 2.5% from 1.9%, citing robust semiconductor exports and recovering domestic consumption. Traders are monitoring upcoming earnings from key chipmakers and any shifts in U.S.-China trade dynamics for signals on whether momentum sustains or volatility intensifies into the week of May 18.
