Strengthening El Niño conditions and mixed seasonal model guidance are the main factors keeping NYC September precipitation probabilities clustered between roughly 2–6 inches. El Niño typically suppresses Northeast rainfall through enhanced subtropical ridging and altered storm tracks, consistent with Old Farmer’s Almanac drier signals and CPC outlooks showing only neutral-to-slightly-below-normal precipitation odds. However, forecast spread, lingering summer moisture patterns, and the potential for occasional tropical moisture or coastal systems support the slight market tilt toward >6 inches (22%) over the driest bins. Historical September totals average near 4.3 inches with high year-to-year variability, so traders are pricing genuine uncertainty rather than a dominant dry or wet regime ahead of early-month model updates.
