China’s consumer price index has moderated sharply through mid-2026, with the annual rate easing to 0.5 percent in July from 1.0 percent in June amid declining food prices and softer non-food components. Weak domestic demand continues to limit pass-through from elevated producer prices, which have been supported by energy costs and supply-chain factors but remain decoupled from consumer readings. Recent monthly declines in pork and other staples, combined with lower global oil prices, have reinforced downside momentum. Traders price the full-year average in the 0.6–1.0 percent band as the most likely outcome, reflecting the sustained gap between subdued consumption and external cost pressures. Upcoming policy measures aimed at supporting growth could influence later quarters, though current trends favor contained inflation absent stronger demand recovery.
