The Berlin state election on September 20 features a tight contest for governing mayor, with recent polls showing Die Linke’s Elif Eralp and CDU’s Stefan Evers running neck-and-neck near 20 percent each amid a fragmented field that includes AfD, Greens, and SPD. Evers took over the CDU ticket in July after incumbent Kai Wegner withdrew amid criticism of his handling of a January power blackout. Traders appear to assign Eralp the edge due to potential left-leaning coalition paths, while Evers faces barriers to continuing the prior CDU-SPD arrangement or building alternatives. The narrow spreads reflect uncertainty over final vote shares and post-election negotiations that could determine which candidate secures the necessary parliamentary support.
