South Korea’s iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) has been propelled by explosive demand for high-bandwidth memory chips from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together dominate the fund’s holdings and have driven the KOSPI index above 7,000 for the first time. Year-to-date gains exceed 96 percent through mid-May 2026, with the ETF touching a 52-week high of 194.58 on May 11 before a sharp 6 percent drop to 178.86 on May 15 amid profit-taking commentary and a stronger dollar. Traders are monitoring upcoming semiconductor export data, Q2 earnings guidance, and any shifts in U.S. trade policy or Fed rate expectations that could alter the USD/KRW exchange rate and risk appetite for Korean equities. The market’s heavy concentration in AI-exposed names creates elevated volatility around these catalysts.
