Helen Frankenthaler’s 1974 soak-stain canvas “Return and Exit,” slated for Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated sale on October 7 with a $1.5–2 million estimate, draws trader attention from its last private sale at $475,500 in 2008 and recent momentum in her mid-tier acrylic works. February 2026’s $1.49 million result for the comparable “Strike” at Christie’s, well above estimates, underscores sustained institutional demand for her signature color-field compositions from the 1960s and 1970s. With no fresh consignment updates in recent weeks, sentiment hinges on how provenance, condition, and broader evening-sale dynamics at major houses influence whether this lot clears or exceeds its low estimate amid steady collector interest in postwar abstraction.
