Recent July 2026 CPI data showed India’s headline inflation rising to 4.45% year-over-year from 4.38% in June, the highest reading since late 2024 and aligned with expectations, driven by elevated food and beverage prices at 5.52% alongside transportation costs amid Middle East energy shocks and rupee depreciation. These pressures have lifted the 2026 annual average trajectory above 4.5%, consistent with analyst models projecting a full-year rate near 4.8–5.1% as unfavorable base effects intensify through year-end. The RBI’s 4% target band with a 2-percentage-point tolerance continues to anchor policy expectations, while subdued core components such as housing provide limited offset. The next CPI release on September 14 will offer further clarity on momentum into the final quarter.
