**Exceptional drought (D4) conditions remain limited but entrenched in parts of the southern Plains and scattered High Plains and western locations as of the August 20 U.S. Drought Monitor map (data valid August 18).** Western Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, southeastern Arkansas, portions of western Nebraska and Colorado, northeastern Oregon, and far southern Idaho show D4, driven by persistent high pressure, record warmth, below-normal precipitation, and flash-drought indicators such as depleted soil moisture and poor crop conditions. Roughly 1.1% of the U.S. registers in D4, with overall drought (D1–D4) covering 44.3% of the nation. The U.S. Drought Monitor map released August 27 will reflect conditions through August 25 and serve as the key resolution input. Forecasters anticipate continued below-normal rainfall across much of Texas and the southern Plains through the period, with above-normal temperatures likely to sustain or intensify deficits, while eastern and northern areas may see relief from expected precipitation. Traders monitor short-term precipitation anomalies, evaporative demand, and streamflow data for any rapid shifts before the data cutoff.
