Mayes Middleton secured the Republican nomination after defeating U.S. Rep. Chip Roy in the May 2026 primary runoff, positioning himself as aligned with the Trump administration on issues such as border security and federal litigation. This open seat, created by Ken Paxton's Senate bid, has produced an unusually competitive general election matchup against Democratic nominee Nathan Johnson. Recent early September polling shows Middleton leading by roughly five points among registered voters, with over 20 percent undecided, narrower than typical Republican margins in Texas statewide races. Trader consensus reflects the state's partisan lean and Middleton's primary spending advantage while pricing in the risk from undecided voters and Democratic inroads with moderates and independents ahead of the November 3 contest.
