Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have driven sharp rises in energy prices, pushing euro-area inflation higher and prompting the ECB to signal tighter policy at its July 2026 meeting. Traders interpret Governing Council statements and updated inflation projections as pointing to a 25-basis-point rate increase at the September 9–10 gathering, where the deposit facility currently stands at 2.25 percent. This data-dependent stance, reinforced by comments from officials highlighting upside risks to the 2 percent target, underpins the strong market-implied probability for a modest hike. Stable core readings or any rapid de-escalation in oil markets could still alter the path, though recent developments have kept expectations firmly tilted toward tightening.
