South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) has delivered extraordinary year-to-date gains exceeding 80 percent through mid-June 2026, fueled by a semiconductor supercycle tied to AI-driven memory demand, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix comprising roughly 45 percent of holdings. The benchmark KOSPI surged to records above 8,600 before a sharp 8.3 percent plunge on June 8 that triggered circuit breakers, triggered by robust U.S. jobs data that heightened Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations and pressured global tech valuations. Export figures showed May semiconductor shipments jumping 169 percent year-over-year, supporting upward earnings revisions, yet the ETF remains sensitive to U.S. monetary policy shifts, monthly chip data releases, and won fluctuations. Traders are monitoring Bank of Korea signals and upcoming economic releases for near-term direction.
