Virginia’s state Supreme Court ruled on May 8 that procedural violations in advancing a constitutional amendment invalidated the April 21 referendum voters had approved to permit mid-decade congressional redistricting. The U.S. Supreme Court declined on May 15 to reinstate the Democratic-drawn map that would have replaced the 2021 lines. Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed on May 14 that the existing districts will govern the November 2026 elections, noting the May 12 statutory deadline for changes had passed. These rulings eliminated the legal pathway for a new map, leaving the current boundaries in place despite earlier legislative efforts and the referendum result.
