A federal grand jury indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center in April 2026 on 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging the organization secretly used over $3 million in donor funds to pay informants inside extremist groups without proper disclosure. The case, brought by the Department of Justice under the Trump administration, advanced with a superseding indictment in June and a not-guilty plea in July. A federal judge recently denied the SPLC’s motion to dismiss the charges as vindictive prosecution, allowing the matter to proceed toward trial. With a verdict possible before the December 31, 2026 resolution deadline, trader pricing at 57% for conviction reflects the strength of the indictment alongside the organization’s ongoing legal challenges and the inherent uncertainty of jury outcomes in complex fraud prosecutions.
