Recent monthly data showing a narrowing U.S. goods and services trade deficit—$73.3 billion in June 2026 versus $77.6 billion in May, with first-half cumulative narrowing to $371.2 billion from $560.5 billion a year earlier—support the market-implied concentration in the 700–900 billion range. Tariff measures enacted in 2025 prompted earlier import front-loading followed by normalization, with imports declining faster than exports amid shifts in capital and consumer goods. Persistent macroeconomic factors, including the savings-investment gap and federal budget dynamics, continue to anchor the overall deficit near these levels despite policy uncertainty. Traders appear to weigh the observed H1 trajectory and limited further compression potential against risks from evolving trade negotiations and domestic demand.
