This market will resolve according to the total number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or higher that occur anywhere on Earth between August 17, 2026, 12:00 AM ET, and August 23, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 6.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until August 25, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used. This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude, or 48 hours if the prior paragraph applies. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.**Global background seismicity sets the baseline for this market.** On average, Earth records roughly one magnitude 6.5+ earthquake per week, derived from long-term USGS catalogs showing ~100–150 M6–6.9 events annually and 15–20 M7+ events, with the M6.5 threshold falling in between. This produces a Poisson-like distribution in which zero or one such event is the most probable outcome over any given seven-day window, directly supporting the close 42.5% versus 34.5% split between the leading outcomes. **No short-term elevation or suppression is evident.** Recent large events, including the M7.4 Colombia quake on August 10 and earlier 2026 sequences in the Philippines and Venezuela, have generated aftershock sequences whose rates decay rapidly; USGS aftershock forecasts assign only low single-digit probabilities to additional M6+ events beyond the immediate post-mainshock period. No ongoing global swarm, slow-slip episode, or tectonic trigger is currently elevating rates above background. **Key variables that differentiate zero from one event** include normal statistical fluctuation around the weekly mean, possible minor clustering from aftershocks of the early-August events, and the inherent uncertainty of rupture timing on active subduction and transform zones. Because earthquakes lack reliable short-term precursors, new data releases—daily USGS global catalogs and any updated aftershock models—will be the primary drivers of market movement through the resolution window.
