Iranian authorities imposed a nationwide internet blackout starting January 8, 2026, amid escalating 2025–2026 protests and the 2026 Iran war involving Israeli and U.S. strikes, marking the longest recorded national shutdown at 88 days before gradual restoration began in late May. The move, attributed to the IRGC and communications ministry for suppressing information flow and covering security operations, isolated roughly 90 million users and disrupted economic activity. Resumption of partial connectivity followed a presidential commission review, though restrictions on international access persisted in prior episodes tied to conflict or unrest. Ongoing regional tensions, protest dynamics, and government digital isolation policies remain key variables that could influence any renewed full cutoff before market resolution dates. Trader consensus reflects the high barriers to another total event absent major new escalations.
