FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s repeated public confirmations that Iran will compete in the 2026 World Cup as originally scheduled in the United States have anchored trader consensus on no replacement. Geopolitical friction between Iran and co-host United States prompted earlier speculation about a boycott or exclusion, including a Trump envoy’s proposal to insert Italy, yet Italian officials immediately labeled the idea inappropriate and FIFA rejected any substitution. Recent Iranian federation statements reaffirming participation while seeking security assurances have further reduced volatility. A late official withdrawal by Iran or an unprecedented FIFA reversal amid renewed hostilities could still open the door for alternatives like Italy or a regional side, though such outcomes remain remote given the tournament’s fixed calendar and emphasis on sporting qualification.
