South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) trades near record levels around $193 as of mid-May 2026, propelled by the ongoing AI semiconductor supercycle that has lifted Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—core holdings comprising nearly half the fund. Explosive demand for high-bandwidth memory has driven semiconductor exports higher, supporting Kospi gains above 80 percent year-to-date and pushing EWY's one-year total return past 210 percent. Corporate reforms continue to narrow the Korea discount while GDP forecasts from the Bank of Korea and IMF hover near 1.9 percent. Trader focus now centers on whether sustained AI capital spending can extend the rally through month-end or if macro headwinds such as U.S. tariff developments or broader equity volatility cap further upside.
