South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) trades near $180 as of late August 2026, with trader focus centered on the AI semiconductor supercycle powering Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together represent roughly 45% of the fund. The Bank of Korea's second consecutive 25-basis-point hike to 3% was offset by an upgraded 2026 GDP forecast to 3.3%, reflecting strong memory-chip export momentum and Nvidia-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory. Recent KOSPI gains near 6,900 underscore resilience despite elevated volatility and a 35% drawdown earlier in the year from peak levels above $218. Key near-term catalysts include any further AI spending signals, U.S. inflation data, and Korean corporate earnings revisions, with heavy IT weighting (nearly 50% of the ETF) making outcomes highly sensitive to global chip pricing and supply dynamics.
