Trader sentiment for the number of global magnitude 5.5+ earthquakes from August 10–16 reflects substantial uncertainty, with probabilities spread across low-to-moderate counts and a notable tail for higher activity. On average, roughly 10–15 such events occur worldwide each week, driven primarily by background seismicity along subduction zones in the Pacific Ring of Fire, mid-ocean ridges, and continental faults, following a roughly Poisson distribution with clustering from aftershock sequences. Recent August 2026 activity, including multiple M6.0+ events such as the 6.3 Philippines and New Zealand quakes plus scattered M5.5+ tremors in Peru, Mexico, and elsewhere, has kept markets attentive to potential aftershock tails that could elevate weekly totals. Key variables include the timing and location of any new mainshocks (especially M6+ events capable of generating M5.5+ aftershocks), regional strain accumulation in high-rate areas like the Aleutians or Indonesia, and natural week-to-week variability observed in USGS catalogs. Lower outcomes (≤6–9) gain support from quieter periods without fresh large events or rapid aftershock decay, while higher counts (>10–13) rise if a new M6.5+ quake or swarm occurs early in the window. The wide distribution underscores the inherent unpredictability of short-term seismic rates, with USGS monitoring and real-time catalogs serving as the main resolution inputs.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until August 18, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
