Ann Kao holds an overwhelming lead in the Hsinchu City mayoral market as the incumbent seeking re-election in the November 2026 local elections. She won the seat in 2022 on the Taiwan People’s Party ticket in a three-way contest, survived a July 2025 recall vote with strong anti-recall margins, and returned to office after the Taiwan High Court overturned her corruption conviction on appeal in late 2025. These developments, combined with her record on infrastructure projects such as the baseball stadium and traffic improvements, underpin trader consensus on her position. The Democratic Progressive Party nominated former legislator Chuang Ching-cheng in April 2026 as its challenger, while the Kuomintang opted not to field a candidate and instead rallied behind Kao at its July 2026 convention. Independent or minor-party entries, including former KMT spokesperson Ho Chih-yung, register minimal support. Candidate registration opens at the end of August 2026, leaving limited time for new entrants to shift the race dynamics.
