The upcoming 12 August 2026 general election drives tight probabilities across multiple candidates for the next prime minister, with no single contender exceeding a narrow implied edge. Incumbent Mark Brown of the Cook Islands Party holds 12 seats from the prior term and leads a government that has faced opposition criticism over foreign partnerships and domestic proposals, while Democratic Party leader Tina Browne and Cook Islands United Party leader Teariki Heather head the main challengers with five and three seats respectively. A fragmented parliament, reliance on independents for majorities, and recent procedural steps including parliament's dissolution keep outcomes fluid. Post-election coalition negotiations and any shifts in voter turnout or candidate endorsements within the coming weeks could quickly alter the distribution of probabilities.
