Robert Abela holds a commanding 91% consensus among traders as Malta’s next prime minister ahead of the May 30 snap general election, reflecting Labour’s decade-long dominance since 2013 and his own incumbency advantage following the 2022 landslide. The prime minister called the early vote on April 27 to secure a renewed mandate amid global energy-price pressures linked to Middle East tensions, allowing Labour to frame the contest around stability and economic resilience. Recent polls show the party maintaining a roughly 20,000-vote lead, while Abela has completed candidate nominations and unveiled the party manifesto. Nationalist leader Alex Borg trails at under 10%, campaigning on change and fixed election terms but facing the structural headwinds of opposition status. Late developments such as voter shifts over inflation or unexpected scandals remain the primary routes for any narrowing of Abela’s position before election day.
