Romania's prolonged political crisis since the May 2026 no-confidence vote that ousted Ilie Bolojan’s pro-European coalition continues to shape the next prime minister market. President Nicușor Dan’s failed nominations of Eugen Tomac and Adrian Veștea in June highlighted deep parliamentary fragmentation, with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and far-right opposition blocking majorities. Alexandru Nazare’s leading position reflects his finance ministry experience and perceived viability as a compromise candidate able to secure centrist and pro-EU backing. Sorin Grindeanu follows due to PSD’s parliamentary weight and explicit party endorsement, though coalition resistance limits his odds. Other contenders trail amid stalled talks over austerity, EU funds access, and majority formation ahead of the 2028 elections.

To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed by the President of Romania and receive a vote of confidence from Parliament, resulting in the official formation of a new government. Any interim or caretaker Prime Minister who does not receive a parliamentary vote of confidence will not count toward the resolution of this market.
If no such Prime Minister takes office by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Romania; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
