The 2027 French presidential election, set for April with a possible runoff, features a wide field shaped by term limits barring Emmanuel Macron and legal proceedings against National Rally leader Marine Le Pen. Her March 2025 embezzlement conviction and five-year public-office ban remain under appeal, with a Paris Court of Appeals ruling due July 7 that could confirm or lift her eligibility and determine whether Jordan Bardella heads the far-right ticket. Jean-Luc Mélenchon formally entered the race in early May, while the center-right Republicans have selected Bruno Retailleau; other declared or expected contenders include Gabriel Attal, Édouard Philippe, and Gérald Darmanin. Left-wing parties are organizing a unitary primary to consolidate support, and the crowded ballot reflects both party fragmentation and early positioning among roughly thirty potential candidates.
