Brazil’s central bank cut the Selic rate by 25 basis points to 13.75% on September 16, extending its easing cycle amid cooling inflation and moderating economic activity. August IPCA inflation fell to 4.22% year-over-year, below the upper tolerance band yet above the 3% target, while Focus survey expectations for 2026 inflation eased modestly to 5%. Economists’ median year-end Selic forecast has stabilized near 13.75%, reflecting limited scope for further cuts given resilient services prices, a tight labor market, and fiscal uncertainty ahead of October’s presidential election. These factors underpin the 52.5% market-implied probability of no change at the December Copom meeting, with smaller odds on additional 25-basis-point moves reflecting data-dependent calibration rather than an aggressive path.
