Saito dispatched Natsuho Arakawa 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 32 yesterday, showcasing sharp serving and baseline play, while veteran Shimizu, 28 and a qualifier, grinded out a three-set win over No. 374 Valentina Ryser. No prior head-to-head exists; both Japanese players thrive on the fast surface, but Saito's momentum and seeding temper Shimizu's experience amid her recent slump. A win advances either to a tough quarterfinal matchup.
