Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent Oberbürgermeister since 2021, secured 43.3% in the September 13 first round of Braunschweig’s direct mayoral election, advancing to the September 27 runoff against CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler, who received 17.2%. Other candidates, including the Greens’ Michael Walther at 14.3% and the AfD’s Mirco Hanker at 11.2%, trailed further behind. Kornblum’s commanding market position reflects his established record on local priorities such as education, infrastructure, and public safety, combined with the structural advantage of facing a single opponent in the runoff under German municipal rules. A narrow Pohler upset would require unusually high mobilization among opposition voters or a sharp last-minute shift in preferences, though the 26-point first-round gap leaves limited scope for such movement absent major unforeseen developments.
