Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent since 2021, secured 43.3% in Braunschweig's September 13 first-round mayoral vote, well ahead of CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler at 17.2% and other candidates including the Greens and AfD. No contender reached an absolute majority, triggering a September 27 runoff between the top two. Kornblum's commanding position stems from his established record on local priorities such as education, public safety, and infrastructure, combined with SPD strength in recent council results and broad voter recognition. Traders price his runoff victory at 95% based on the first-round margin and historical patterns of incumbent consolidation in German local runoffs. Late shifts remain possible if turnout drops sharply or unexpected alliances form, though the gap leaves limited room for reversal.
