Thorsten Kornblum, the incumbent SPD mayor of Braunschweig since 2021, secured 43.3 percent in the September 13 first round, well ahead of the CDU challenger Maximilian Pohler at 17.2 percent, triggering a September 27 runoff. Traders assign Kornblum a 95 percent implied probability of victory, reflecting his established local support base, the SPD's position as the largest council faction, and the substantial gap that historically favors frontrunners in German municipal runoffs. Other listed candidates received negligible shares and are eliminated. Late developments such as unusually low turnout, major campaign shifts, or unforeseen events could still narrow the margin before the runoff concludes.
