Italy's center-right coalition under incumbent Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to anchor trader sentiment at the front of the field, sustained by three years of relative governmental stability and policy continuity on migration and fiscal matters ahead of elections required by December 2027. The March 2026 referendum defeat on judicial reform, which drew 54 percent opposition, dented momentum and highlighted coalition vulnerabilities without triggering immediate collapse or leadership shifts. On the center-left, Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein and Genoa mayor Silvia Salis trail closely as potential unifiers, buoyed by post-referendum opposition momentum and calls for primaries, while figures such as Giuseppe Conte and Angelo Bonelli reflect ongoing fragmentation that could prolong coalition negotiations under proportional representation.
