President Trump announced Project Freedom in early May 2026 as a U.S. military effort to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz following prior strikes on Iranian naval assets. The operation paused within days after Saudi Arabia declined base access, Pakistan and other nations requested restraint, and U.S.-Iran talks showed progress toward a potential agreement. Trump has publicly stated he is weighing a restart, while Iran warned it stands ready for any outcome and the existing naval blockade remains in place. With the May 31 resolution deadline approaching, trader sentiment centers on whether diplomatic momentum holds or if operational and economic pressures prompt a swift return to escorted transits before the window closes.
