**Recent US sanctions intensification and ongoing economic isolation have driven the Iranian rial to successive record lows near 2.07 million per USD in late August 2026, positioning further depreciation as the dominant trader consensus for end-September.** The free-market rate has climbed from roughly 1.53 million shortly after the February 2026 conflict onset and 1.7–1.8 million earlier in the year, fueled by a naval blockade restricting oil exports, secondary sanctions targeting trade partners, and measures hitting sectors including shipping, aviation, and digital assets. These steps follow the expiration of a temporary June sanctions-relief window without a broader nuclear or trade accord. Iran’s economy faces sharply reduced foreign-exchange earnings, double-digit inflation, and projected contraction, sustaining strong demand for USD amid limited official intervention capacity. With resolution only weeks away, traders assign the highest probability to rates above 2.2 million, reflecting expectations that enforcement momentum and structural export constraints will outweigh any short-term diplomatic signals before September closes.
