Tensions in the Middle East have kept trader attention on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, with repeated threats from Houthi officials and Iranian figures in April 2026 to restrict or close the waterway in response to U.S. actions around the Strait of Hormuz. No commercial vessels have been attacked in the Red Sea since late 2025, however, and shipping continues to transit the chokepoint despite heightened naval deployments and rerouting by major carriers. Oil flows from Saudi ports such as Yanbu remain operational, though any sustained closure would immediately pressure global energy benchmarks and force longer Cape of Good Hope voyages for Asian-European trade. Market-implied odds reflect this gap between rhetoric and realized disruption, with uncertainty tied to whether broader Iran-U.S. escalation materializes before key diplomatic deadlines.
