Recent cooling U.S. inflation data and soft economic releases, including weaker-than-expected retail sales and nonfarm payrolls, have reduced market-implied probabilities of a September Federal Reserve rate hike, easing pressure on the U.S. dollar and providing near-term support for gold. Spot XAU/USD has traded around $4,375 per ounce in mid-August after briefly surpassing $4,400 earlier in the month, well below the January 2026 peak near $5,600 but above multi-month lows near $4,000. Persistent central bank demand, lingering Middle East geopolitical risks, and lower Treasury yields continue to underpin prices, while higher real rates and a firmer dollar remain key downside risks. Traders are monitoring upcoming housing, PMI, and employment data for shifts in the policy outlook ahead of the FOMC meeting.
