Elise Mertens enters this WTA Berlin grass-court round-of-16 matchup as the clear favorite against Nikola Bartunkova, reflecting her superior ranking (No. 24 vs. No. 62), extensive experience on the surface, and prior straight-sets victory over the same opponent at the 2026 Australian Open. Bartunkova, however, arrives with strong recent grass form, remaining undefeated in seven grass-court matches this season, many in straight sets, which has kept the contest competitive in trader pricing. Both players navigated demanding three-set openers in Berlin, raising questions about recovery and serving efficiency on the fast surface. Mertens’ consistency and tactical adaptability typically prevail in such settings, while Bartunkova’s aggressive baseline game and improving serve create realistic upset potential if she maintains first-serve percentages and capitalizes on any lapses in Mertens’ movement.
