Maine’s 2nd congressional district features an open seat after Democratic incumbent Jared Golden’s retirement, pitting Republican nominee and former governor Paul LePage against Democratic nominee Matt Dunlap following a June 2026 ranked-choice primary. The district’s rural character, recent Republican strength in statewide races, and alignment with national midterm dynamics keep the contest close, as shown by polling averages near the margin of error. Trader consensus at 58% for Republicans versus 42.5% for Democrats reflects LePage’s name recognition and fundraising edge balanced against Dunlap’s state government experience and the seat’s historical competitiveness. Upcoming debates, endorsements, turnout patterns in key counties, and any shifts in economic sentiment could widen the gap before the November general election.
