South Africa's 2026 inflation outlook remains anchored around 4.4-5.0% amid fuel-driven volatility, with SARB forecasts and recent CPI prints shaping trader positioning. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East lifted June headline inflation to a two-year high of 5.0% before easing to 4.3% in July, driven by transport costs that peaked above 12% year-over-year. The SARB's 7% policy rate, held steady in July, and its May projection of 4.4% average inflation this year reflect efforts to contain second-round effects while expectations hover near 3.6%. Close odds across the 4.4-5.0% range highlight uncertainty over oil price persistence, rand movements, and core inflation trends versus the anticipated moderation toward the 3% target by 2028. The September MPC meeting and August CPI release represent key near-term catalysts.
