This market will resolve to "Yes" if there is a military encounter between the military forces of China (People's Republic of China) and Japan between November 17, 2025, and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". A "military encounter" is defined as any incident involving the use of force such as missile strikes, artillery fire, exchange of gunfire, or other forms of direct military engagement between Chinese and Japanese military forces. Non-violent actions, such as warning shots, artillery fire into uninhabited areas, or missile launches that land in territorial waters or pass through airspace, will not qualify for a "Yes" resolution. Intentional ship ramming that results in significant damage to (e.g., a hole in the hull) or the sinking of a military ship by another will count toward a "Yes" resolution, however minor damage (scrapes, dents) will not. Note: the China Coast Guard (CCG) is part of the military, however Japan Coast Guard (JCG) is not. The resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.**Traders assign a 93.5% implied probability to no direct China-Japan military clash before 2027, reflecting the persistence of gray-zone competition rather than open conflict in the narrow window remaining.** Tensions have remained elevated since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s November 2025 Diet remarks linking a Taiwan contingency to Japan’s “survival-threatening situation,” prompting Beijing’s diplomatic freeze, dual-use export controls, and renewed historical grievances. Recent months have seen continued Chinese Coast Guard incursions near the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, joint China-Russia naval and air activity including a July 2026 live-fire drill in waters Tokyo claims as its EEZ, and Japanese surveillance responses, yet these incidents have been contained through protests, monitoring, and limited diplomatic exchanges. Cross-party Japanese lawmakers visited Beijing in late August 2026 for the first such talks since the rift began, and some commercial channels have reopened, though Beijing continues to condition any broader reset on changes to Tokyo’s Taiwan stance. With roughly four months left until 2027 and no verified escalatory triggers or mobilization signaling imminent kinetic engagement, market pricing aligns with the pattern of managed rivalry below the threshold of direct military confrontation.
